Knowledge and Understanding of the World - A treasure hunt
- Adult:
- Anyone ever been on a treasure hunt before?
- Child 1:
- [simultaneously] Will they put chews in a basket?
- Adult:
- Yes, but this time it isn't in a basket, I don't think, it might be hiding somewhere else.
- Child 2:
- I've been to a treasure hunt.
- Adult:
- Right, this is the map. Has anybody seen anything that looks like this? [indicates a picture on the map]
- Children:
- [call out several different inaudible answers simultaneously]
- Adult:
- The sand, and where is it? Is it in Mrs Carol's classroom?
- Child 3:
- No, it's in our room.
- Child 1:
- Or where spiders and slugs are.
- Adult:
- That's right, that's where the spiders and slugs are. We might see some spiders and slugs today, Jaiden. I'm going to give you some pictures, and these... [drops something] Oops!...
- Child 1:
- Oh-oh!
- Adult:
- Oh-oh! Thank you. These are what we're going to be looking for. I've got lots of pictures: you can have two each, I think. Two for you... and all these creatures are hiding outside. What have you got?
- Child 1:
- I've got a frog and a rabbit.
- Adult:
- A frog and a rabbit! And what have you got?
- Child 4:
- A hedgehog and...
- Adult:
- Hedgehog and... Know what that one is? Lives up a tree and eats [mimics nut-eating] nuts?
- Child 4:
- Squirrel.
- Adult:
- That's right, well done. So, we're going to need somebody to carry the basket, because we're going to put our clues. We'll take it, I tell you what we'll take it in turn...
- Adult:
- Right, if we go down here. Look at all that water. I might let you splash in that water later. Who knows where the bugs live? Oh, Jaiden does! And what are we looking for? Can you see a... Look, Jaiden, have you found the snail already?
- Child 1:
- Yeah.
- Adult:
- Oh, look at you! Without even this clue [indicates something hanging from tree]. Right, next one we're going to "keep on walking in a line, you may see a nut collector this time", but who's got, what colour are we looking for here?
- Child 3:
- Me!
- Adult:
- You, so what are we looking for, Sahale? What's that?
- Childs:
- [all shout out]
- Child 3:
- These are the same as what you're looking for.
- Adult:
- They are, let's show everybody what you're looking for. So we've got to walk up there and see if we can in fact look underneath the leaves.
- Adult:
- Danielle? Come on now, let's see, show everybody what you've got.
- Child 4:
- Hedgehog.
- Adult:
- A hedgehog, so it says "O...", listen to the clue, "Over the path, and up to the wigwam, there may be somebody prickly. Find him, if you can". Where's the wigwam? "Go up to the wigwam, look for your orange clue." Can you see the orange clue? Let's have a look at your picture. Looking for the hedgehog. Let's have a look under the leaves. Is he under the leaves?
- Child 4:
- Found him.
- Adult:
- Oh, look at that, Danielle's found him! Right, now we're looking for this orange strip , which must be close by, because it's a clue. Purple, who's got purple? Jaiden's got purple, well done, so what are we looking for, Jaiden?
- Child 1:
- Erm, frog.
- Adult:
- Right, come here and listen now to where we need to go. "Near the river bed, this one lives, jumps up and down and frogspawn he will give". So we need to go to the river bed. Be careful not to slip.
- Child 3:
- There!
- Adult:
- Right, what are we looking for? Let's have a look at your picture card. You're purple. What's this we're looking for?
- Child 2:
- Frog.
- Adult:
- A frog, we're not looking for those, we're looking for a frog just now. There's lots of animals. Look under the, under the leaves and round the river bed.
- Child 2:
- I don't like frogs.
- Adult:
- Can anybody see... Don't you like frogs? Can you see it round here? Oh, look what Danielle's found again! Well done!
- Child 1:
- I need to put mine in the basket.
- Adult:
- You do need to put yours in the basket, well done.
