| The DfES is responsible for education provision in England. It may be helpful to explain how the DfES came to adopt the ethnic background categories in use in schools in England and why we use certain terminology.

| March 2005: Minority Ethnic pupils make further progress at GCSE |
| Asian and Black pupils made the greatest rate of improvement in 2004 examinations according to recently released figures.
The proportion of Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Black Caribbean, Black African and other Black pupils achieving 5 or more A* to C grades at GCSE and equivalent in 2004 has improved by more than 2.5 percentage points in each group. The biggest improvers were Pakistani pupils who have improved by nearly 4 percentage points from 41.5% to 45.2%. |
