March 2006: Exam Results for BME pupils 2005
The Statistical First Release 'National Curriculum Assessment, GCSE and equivalent attainment and Post-16 attainment by pupil characteristics, in England, 2005' has now been published and shows that exam results for minority ethnic pupils continue to improve.

The DfES is responsible for education provision in England. It may be helpful to explain how the DfES came to adopt the ethnic background categories in use in schools in England and why we use certain terminology.

March 2005: Minority Ethnic pupils make further progress at GCSE
Asian and Black pupils made the greatest rate of improvement in 2004 examinations according to recently released figures. The proportion of Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Black Caribbean, Black African and other Black pupils achieving 5 or more A* to C grades at GCSE and equivalent in 2004 has improved by more than 2.5 percentage points in each group. The biggest improvers were Pakistani pupils who have improved by nearly 4 percentage points from 41.5% to 45.2%.

January 2004: EAL Pilot 2004-2005 DFES/PNS
The Primary National Strategy (PNS), working in partnership with the Ethnic Minority Achievement Project Team of the DfES, is developing a pilot project in 21 LEAs which aims to increase the confidence and expertise of mainstream primary teachers in meeting the needs of advanced bilingual learners.

November 2003: Evaluation of the Parent Held Education Record
The Department is carrying out an evaluation of the Parent Held Education Record. This booklet is issued to mobile Gypsy/Traveller pupils and is designed to help schools assess their previous educational levels quickly and effectively. The evaluation, using 2 short questionnaires, one for teachers and one for pupils/parents will be conducted throughout November.
