Establishing and reviewing a homework policy

'We are ultimately looking to allow our pupils the best possibility of achieving success by the end of each Key Stage. We can provide extension, support, reinforcement, revision and enjoyment by the planning of extra tasks to be completed at home'. (School Homework Policy)

Establishing a policy

The policy was established following discussions with staff on the need for consistency of approach across all year groups, and good practice, particularly with regard to the setting, monitoring and marking of homework.

Other schools in the area were also consulted on their homework practices.

In November 1995 a questionnaire was sent to parents of the previous Year 6 pupils requesting their views on whether the school had been setting the right amount of homework to prepare their children for secondary education. This has now become established annual practice.

The outcome of the consultation helped to formulate the new policy, which had to be realistic and manageable for everyone involved.

Aims were identified, along with progressive homework entitlements for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils. The nature of the additional work undertaken by KS2 pupils in Years 3 and 4, and then Years 5 and 6 were also suggested.

Parental support

As parental support and involvement was regarded as crucial to the Policy's success, a number of expectations were put in place. The 'Welcome to a new class' letter would inform parents of the different homework activities for each year group. They would also be informed of when it was set and to be returned. Additionally, teachers made a commitment to notify parents if and why homework had not been set. Parents and pupils were also informed of whom to contact if assistance was required.

Reviewing the homework policy

Every two years the policy is reviewed, with the involvement of teachers, governors, parents, and former and present pupils:

  • teachers review their practices, expectations, reward system and sanctions;
  • pupils in Years 3 to 6 are given a questionnaire to explore various aspects of their education, including homework; and
  • parents' views are also sought through a comprehensive tick box homework survey.

The outcome of this consultation helps the School to develop and refine its existing policy.
