Initial Teacher Training

The purpose of this material is to support initial teacher training (ITT) providers in reviewing and developing their literacy provision in response to the recommendations of the Rose Report into early reading, the renewed Primary Framework for literacy, and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

The material is in two parts:

Part one – Review

A set of key questions to guide reviews of ITT literacy provision.

Part two – Development

Guidance for linking the Rose Report recommendations, the Primary Framework and the EYFS to exemplifications of:

  • children's experience
  • practitioner knowledge
  • research and background reading
  • training and professional development resources.

The focus of part two is the first three aspects of the Rose Report. For each of these there is a hyperlink from part one to the relevant exemplification in part two.

The review and development material is intended to be used flexibly according to context. It can be used as guidance, in its entirety, or can be adapted to meet providers’ needs.

The material has been developed in collaboration with colleagues from the ITT sector.
