What can research do for CPD coordinators?

Activities and information to help you enhance CPD's contribution to teaching and learning

Introduction

The aim of this electronic resource is to provide CPD/Staff Development Coordinators with information and activities involving research that they can use to enhance the impact of professional development upon teaching and learning.

It has been produced by the National Teacher Research Panel to illustrate the benefits of research for staff development.

The material is constructed on the same principles as a lesson, providing a starter activity, the equivalent of plenary activities, a choice of learning strategies and a debriefing activity.

It is aimed at colleagues with responsibilities for co-ordinating staff development who have just started to consider how other peoples’ research and/or practitioner research can play a part in enhancing teaching and learning.

The learning objectives are to equip teachers using the materials with:

  • a deeper understanding of their colleagues’ professional development needs;
  • an overview of what is known about continuing professional development and the impact it has on teaching and learning; and
  • an opportunity to experiment with research processes and to model use of research in their own professional learning.

We recommend you navigate the guidelines using the in-text links rather than the navigation bar on the left. These will guide you through the materials in a sensible way. Future updates of our website will make sure the presentation is improved and we would welcome your comments on this.
