IDP National Launch 17th October 2007 : Resume of key speakers and video clips of the national launch

The National launch of the Inclusion Development Programme (IDP) was held at London Docklands on 17 October 2007. The event was hosted by a variety of National Strategies, I CAN and Dyslexia Action colleagues. Lord Andre Adonis provided the opening address for the conference.

Key speakers at the launch were as follows:

Di Hatchett was a Senior Director with the Primary National Strategy. Her remit covered all aspects of inclusion and achievement. Di was involved in the early development of the IDP and responsible for overseeing the arrangements for the launch event, its smooth running and the golden thread – including introducing all those who presented and placing them in context. Di provided a useful overview of the national and political context in which the IDP is set, placing the IDP at the heart of the School Improvement and Quality First Teaching agenda.

Sue Ellis is a Senior Director within the Early Years Foundation Stage of the National Strategies. She holds responsibility for CLLD and inclusion. Sue’s presentation provided the background to the EYFS IDP, placing CLLD at the heart of effective practice in the EYFS, supporting early identification and intervention to ensure that high-quality provision within a wide range of settings is effective in narrowing the achievement gap for the most disadvantaged.

Chris Beek is the National Director of SEN/LDD with the National Strategies. Chris provided an introduction to the new National Strategies SEN/LDD team and highlighted some of the current priorities in the field of SEN/LDD illustrated by relevant data. He highlighted the role of the IDP as one of a series of approaches aimed at narrowing the achievement gap for all pupils and provided details of the support available for implementation.

Mary Daly is the Programme Leader of the IDP working for the National Strategies. Mary provided an overview of the resources, outlining who the audiences for the resources are, the approaches to learning adopted by the IDP and further detail of the structure of the programme and the content. Mary was joined by Bea Reed, a specialist Senior Adviser with the Primary National Strategy with responsibility for initial teacher training (ITT). Bea highlighted the approach to be taken to adapt the materials to enable ITT providers to use these as part of initial teacher training courses to develop the schools’ workforce of the future.

Phil Snell is the Programme Leader: SEN and Disability with the Training and Development Agency (TDA). Phil outlined the context and scope of the work of the TDA in relation to SEN/LDD. Phil outlined the TDA’s role in working in partnership with the National Strategies and voluntary sector to develop the IDP materials to support initial teacher training and teacher induction.

I CAN - The National Strategies were privileged to work in partnership with I CAN and its partner organisations in developing the materials for the IDP in relation to speech, language and communication needs. Virginia Beardshaw is the Chief Executive of I CAN. Virginia presented an overview of I CAN – the children’s communication charity. She presented some moving real-life stories of children who experienced specific speech, language and communication needs and the ways in which potential barriers were overcome. Virginia’s presentation highlighted the message that language = life chances with an overview of the prevalence, the reasons for intervention and what strategies are effective in improving speech, language and communication.

Dyslexia Action  - The National Strategies were privileged to work in partnership with Dyslexia Action and their partner organisations in developing the materials for the IDP in relation to dyslexia. Shirley Cramer is the Chief Executive of Dyslexia Action. Shirley presented an overview of Dyslexia Action – a national charity. She presented some of the facts and figures in relation to dyslexia. Shirley’s presentation highlighted why early intervention is necessary and provided an overview of some of the strategies that are effective in removing the achievement gap for children with dyslexia.
