What you can do next – key actions

We recommend that you aim to achieve three key outcomes from using the renewed Frameworks:

  • an increased understanding of the changes to subject teaching and pupil entitlement that the new secondary curriculum is designed to achieve
  • identification of your priorities for renewal, development and change in your scheme of work and to further improve subject teaching and learning that result in increased progress for all pupils
  • familiarity with the full suite of materials available within the renewed Frameworks so that you can use them to review, plan and evaluate current and future subject teaching.

First steps

Go directly to the subject Framework you need to use. Become familiar with the navigation structure and guidance offered by this electronic Framework.

Use the key lines of progression when you review your current scheme of work.

Identify, by working with both the renewed Framework of objectives and the new programmes of study, what you want to achieve in the subject. Identify a few key priorities for development or change and make them part of a clear phased implementation plan. Agree and establish the department's vision for the subject within the context of the whole-school curriculum. Involve the whole department in this by working together in deciding what you need to do differently. Start by identifying where you can secure continuity with existing good practice.

Use the subject Framework of objectives for the detailed support for planning. Structure your review of planning between scoping progression for groups of pupils across a term, a year and a key stage, and the detailed planning of units of work and lesson sequences.

Remember: this is about renewal, not starting from scratch.
