Excellence in Cities (EiC) 1999 - 2006

Summary - this page introduces the EiC programme and then provides links for more information and a map of the areas that participated.

The Excellence in Cities programme, launched in March 1999, made a unique contribution to the raising of attainment of disadvantaged pupils in our most deprived cities, towns, and rural areas. Its work, through more than 1300 secondary and 3600 primary schools nationwide, has transformed the life chances of many thousands of young people by bringing huge levels of new financial investment; new approaches to teaching and learning; and crucially, new hope through the continual raising of expectations; to a meet a challenge that successive Governments had previously failed to tackle. Its impact is continuing to be felt even though it ceased to be a centrally run programme in April 2006. To find out more, please visit the links below.
