Time Traveller Lands at City Learning Centre!

Professor McGinty, time traveller extraordinaire, recently visited Kings Norton City Learning Centre. The Professor, otherwise known as actor Richard Allen, visits schools around the country telling children of his time-travelling adventures.

In this, the latest of his adventures, he teamed up with the staff from Kings Norton City Learning Centre to integrate ICT activities into his workshop. Students were transported back to Tudor times and given tasks to help the Professor with his travels. They used the internet to answer his questions, which they then emailed back to him before he could continue the adventure. Later, they found specific images, which they eventually incorporated into a virtual museum using Microsoft Powerpoint.

The students were from Swanshurst Girls School and had been to visit the CLC several times before as part of the progress curriculum they are following. The aim of the progress curriculum is to improve literacy and numeracy levels of Year 7 pupils. This is done through the targeted use of ICT within an innovative history and geography curriculum. Visits to the CLC are an integral part of this process.

The students learnt a great deal about Tudor times whilst having a great time. They tried out Tudor costumes and even instruments of torture. The scold’s collar used for people who talked too much was in great demand by the teachers!

“What a wonderful day,” Martin Sutton, Swanshurst training school manager said of the day. “The input from the Professor was fantastic and totally captivated the pupils. The activities organised by the CLC staff linked in seamlessly and really added value to the real learning that was obviously taking place. The children were inspired and this day has led to a number of follow up activities back at Swanshurst.”

Look out for future visits by Professor McGinty – he may even be able to contact you via video conferencing!
