Aimhigher is designed to address the under-representation of students from disadvantaged backgrounds in higher education.
Aimhigher (formerly Excellence Challenge) was launched in September 2001 to increase the numbers of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds who apply for and enter higher education. It does this by raising aspiration and attainment levels of 13-19 year olds through improved links between universities, colleges and schools in EiC areas, EAZs and some Excellence Clusters. Activities include university tasters, summer schools and the Aimhigher Roadshow.
In August 2004 Aimhigher integrated with the HEFCE / LSC led university outreach programme - 'Partnerships for Progression'. The new unified Aimhigher programme is a national outreach programme operating most intensively in disadvantaged areas to raise young people's attainment and aspirations towards higher education.
