What was planned?

20 talented Year 10 dual linguists from 4 schools in Kettering were given the opportunity to see 'languages in action' with the aim of boosting their understanding of the relevance of their language work in school and to help them consider their options for 'A' level.

The project was jointly planned between 4 secondary schools in Kettering, county study support coordinators, the language teacher from one of the schools and staff from the international department at Barclaycard based in Northampton. The project involved both extra language input in school and a chance for the pupils to put their languages to practical use at Barclaycard.

Meetings between Barclaycard staff and the language teacher from the school ensured that the additional language sessions would be tailored to the needs of business and help to equip the students for their day at Barclaycard.

What was done and when?

Following six after school language sessions the students did a day of language 'immersion' within the International Department of Barclaycard. They received and planned presentations in French and German and had opportunities to video conference with staff in some of the European bases. Despite being nervous the students tackled the challenges of the day with great enthusiasm, greatly helped by staff at Barclaycard who were anxious that the students maximised this opportunity.

What has the impact been?

The project was very successful, but the full impact has yet to be realised. Immediately, the students were excited and enthused to pursue a career involving languages. The project also helped students consider their 'A' level options more carefully and influenced their choices. The main aim was fully met - the students realised the application and relevance of languages within the business world and that they didn’t actually have to leave their home town to do it.

What was learnt and what were the next steps?

The schools are planning further events - business weeks at their schools, another language project with Barclaycard and also forging business links closer to their schools.
