There are many study support projects that involve sport. The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) are working in conjunction to develop a national infrastructure to deliver the Prime Minister's commitment that all 5-16 year olds will have an entitlement to two hours of high quality PE and school sport a week within and outside the curriculum.
DCSF funds the Qualification and Curriculum Authority's (QCA) PE and School Sport (PESS) project which aims to identify and disseminate examples of good practice to help schools deliver the two hour commitment. In total 40 schools are involved in the project. All have seen improvements, over the study period, in terms of attainment and a decreasing number of incidents of behavioural problems, including truancy and exclusions. The focus for 2002-03 is on providing 'hard data' evidence to demonstrate the contribution that PE and school sport can make to school improvement and raising standards.
