Setting Targets for Pupil Achievement

Foreword

As a governor you have a crucial role to play in ensuring that all the pupils in your school receive the best possible education. Our children deserve the best, and with your help the quality of education in our schools will be improved.

From September 1998 you will have to make sure that challenging targets for pupil improvement are set at your school. Setting Targets for Pupil Achievement has been specially prepared for school governors. It offers practical advice and suggests the type of questions you will need to ask when working with the head and staff in agreeing targets. More detailed guidance, From Targets to Action, was sent recently to schools by the Schools Effectiveness Unit.

Target-setting is a key tool for raising expectations and standards. I hope that this guidance will help you to work with school staff to improve standards for all pupils.

Stephen Byers
